Math for teaching, math for life

Approaching the 361st Harvard Commencement, we asked several degree candidates to reflect on their Harvard Extension School experiences. Below, Tasneem Mohammed, a 2012 degree candidate in the Mathematics for Teaching Graduate Program, shares some of her favorite memories and how the lessons learned in her Extension School classes have carried over into her own classroom.

I can unequivocally state that my Harvard Extension School experience has been truly one of a kind. As I reflect on the time spent at Harvard, my mind focuses back on the invaluable lessons I have gained in my classes, the distinguished faculty with whom I have created significant and meaningful relationships, and the diverse students with whom I have been fortunate enough to interact. I will look back on this enriching experience with a smile on my face, knowing that Harvard University has left a long-lasting impact on my life and my career. (more…)

Otto Pizza co-founder and Extension alum shares advice for entrepreneurs

by Liz M.

What does it take to be an entrepreneur? “You have to live it,” says Anthony Allen, co-owner of Otto Pizza and a Harvard Extension School graduate. Allen, ALB ’94, and his co-owner Mike Keon have expanded their pizza business from a single restaurant in Portland, Maine, to a family of 3 restaurants with a fourth on the way targeting a May 1 opening in Brookline, Massachusetts.

I recently spoke with Allen about his career choices and advice for young entrepreneurs, his experiences at Harvard Extension School, and most importantly, pizza. (more…)

Behind the lens: a look at Commencement 2010

Hey, Jeffry the Extension School staff photographer here, covering my fourteenth Commencement. What an event. The pomp, the tradition, the joy, and all those people. Each year, I dash about the sea of black robes and mortar boards to find and photograph specific award winners or graduates with fascinating life stories.

I always start out feeling like I am looking for a needle in a haystack. But quickly, the distinguishing differences become apparent such as shoes—colorful, comfortable, or chic.

Festive hair adornments, mortar-board messages, smiley-face grad glasses.

I recognize faces from courses I’ve photographed.

And I meet proud families.

With each smiling face, I am carried beyond the frame of my viewfinder into my favorite part of the day—getting to know more about the Extension School students.

Eventually, I find Daniela, who is leaning against a box in the Yard, resting.

She talks about her award-winning thesis, her family from Spain and her mom from Mexico who are present at Commencement, and she sweetly tells of her baby who is due in 2 weeks.

I look forward to next year’s haystack and the needles I will find.
